? Edmunds will be the next foe today for Othello's Little League all-stars when they attempt to keep their drive for a state title and possible regional qualification alive in state tournament play at Lynnwood. The Little Leaguers made local history Tuesday as they became the first Othello team ever to win a state tournament game with a thrilling 3-2 decision over South Highland West of Seattle. The local stars had qualified for the state tournament last Satur- day at Ephrata by breezing to the district championship with an 11-0 trouncing of Moses Lake International. The Othello team will square off against Edmunds at 6:30 p.m. tonight in their next action .in the 10-team single elimination tournament. A win tonight will qualify them for the semi-finals at 6:30 B semi-finals on Friday. Preun- inger would then be available for the Saturday champion- ship. nl p.m. on Friday. The cham- pionship game is set for 3 p.m. on Saturday. Praised by Coach "The kids played fantastic ball and beat a team Tuesday that was favored to win the tournament," Coach Hump Prieur reported Wednesday morning. "The South High- land West kids were lots bigger than our team, but we played them right down the line. We now have high hopes of going all the way in the tournament." Should Othello win the state event, they would advance to the Little League regionals scheduled for San Bernadio, Calif. Prieur said Scott Preun- inger will get the starting assignment against Edmunds today. Under tournament rules, Othello will be able to come back with Jim Sandusky, who had a no, hitter Tuesday, if they are in to the tournament :i!!i: !i and put Othello ahead to stay. Preuninger had the only other hit for Othello in the game. Easy Win Saturday Last Saturday the outcome of the district championship game was never in doubt after the second inning as 'the Othello all-stars backed up Sandusky's two-hit pitching with another strong hitting and fielding performance. DeLoach opened the bottom of the second with a long double down the alley in left center and it was all Othello's game the rest of the way. Tom Kummer, Eddie Acosta and Lolo Garza all followed with singles and Preuninger, Schlagel and Sandusky drew walks. When the smoke had cleared the locals had a 5-0 lead. Kummer provided a big boost in the third as he came up with the defensive play of the game. The little second baseman went high in the air to grab a sinking line drive and then threw to first to double off the surprised runner there. Othello added another run in the third and then piled up four more in the fourth as Sandusky delivered his third home run in as many district tournament games. The drive cleared the fence in left center and came with Schlagel on base. Sandusky held Moses Lake hitless until the fifth inning and then allowed only a couple of scratch singles. He struck out eight and walked just two batters in the game. No-Hitter Sandusky had an outstand- ing pitching performance as he held the South Highland team hitless and had problems only in the fourth. Othello took advantage of wildness by the South High- land pitcher to jump into a 1-0 lead in the first inning with leadoff batter Donnie Schlagel scoring after three straight walks. South Highland went in front 2-1 in the top of the fourth on two walks and a balk by Sandusky, but the Othello stars came charging right back in their half of the inning. Linc Burton walked and then went to third on a double by Sandusky. After Danny DeLoach had walked, Tim Stephens' double scored two CHAMPS CONGRATULATED District Little League champions receive congratulations from an o[fid~ in Ephrata last Saturday night after scoring an 114) win.
