Eight pretty, young rodeo enthusiasts from all parts of Washington will be on hand here Friday night when competition gets underway in the 1974 Miss Rodeo Wash- ington contest. The girls will be facing about 44 busy and exciting hours with climax coming 4 p.m. on Sunday when one of them is named Miss Rodeo Washington of 1975. "This is one of the best entries we have had in the contest in years," Mrs. Max McCombs, contest co-chair- man, reported this week. "We are looking for some close competition with a fine representative for the state next year." The contest, which is being presented as part of the Othello Rodeo for the llth straight year, has undergone some basic changes this year, but the format will be the same. Judging Change One major change will be the judging procedure. In past years three judges have been selected for each of the three categories - personality, ap- pearance and horsmanship - and rated the girls only in those sections. This year all nine of the judges will view the girls in all pageant events and rate them on their specialities. "We think this is fairer to both the girls and the judges ," Mrs. McCombs stated. The pageant activities will start Friday night with the annual kick-off banquet set for 7:30 p.m. at Freddie's Res- taurant. The dinner is open to the public with advanced-sale ticket purchase urged to assure a seat. The tickets sell for $4.50 per plate and are available at Community Savings and Loan. Saturday morning the con- testants wilt participate in the fair-rodeo parade and then enter the horsemanship com- petition. Horsemanship Featuring a new addition of ~goat-tying this year, the horsemanship event will get underway at 1 p.m. at the rodeo grounds. Admission will be $1 per person. Officials report that the goat-tying is part of the national competi- tion, and is a cross between barrel racing and calf roping. The contestants will each give an exhibition in goat- tying during the Saturday performance of the rodeo, and then await the Sunday show when 1974 titlelist Karel Blair of Elk will crown her successor.
