I want to try drying some
fruits and vegetables. But, I
don't know whether my family
is going to like them very
much so I'd Hke to dry just a
little bit this year. l've heard
about drying in my oven. How
much does it cost? What kind
of equipment will I need?
Sounds to me like a very
sensible approach.
Eunice Meakin, Extension
nutritionist at Washington
State University, says you'll
need wire trays for oven
drying. Cookie sheets won't do
because they don't let the air
circulate.
Just tack wire screening to a
wooden frame; make the
frame about four inches
smaller than the inside of your
oven. Cheesecloth trays will
also work unless you have a
gas oven; the cloth has a nasty
habit of burning up. Trays are
the only special equipment
you'll need.
Oven drying costs about
three cents an hour; some
foods may take up to 24 hours
for drying.
The experts say the only
way you can save money
drying foods is to have them
available pretty close to free.

Coffee Party
Is Surprise
On Birthday
When Elsie Barker answer-
ed her doorbell the morning of
Sept. 30, her birthday, she
expected to see two friends
coming for coffee. Instead she
found nine women waiting to
surprise her. With them came
a beautifully decorated cake,
made by Mrs. Ron Floyd, gifts
and cards, for a morning of
visiting over the coffee and
tea cup.
Gathered were Mrs. Leon
Maggard, Mrs. Lester Dar-
nell, Mrs. Dan Brandel, Mrs.
Otis Morley, Mrs. Rollie Bray,
Mrs. Howard Jones, Mrs.
Gene Coatney, Mrs. Bill
Gilland, Cheryl Floyd, Angela
Brandel and Mrs. Floyd.
Highlight of the party was
the reading from the Book of
Proverbs, chapter 31; verses
10-31, by Mrs. Darnell which
she dedicated to Mrs. Barker.
