i locomotive will be in service
on the Milwaukee Road
system during the remaining
weeks of 1974 and throught-
out 1975 and 1976.
It is a Bicentennial "first"
among railroads in the Mil-
waukee Road's 16-state area.
For the balance of the
winter, at least, it will be
regularly assigned as the lead
motive power unit on one of
the railroad's transcontinental
"time freights" running bet-
ween Chicago and Seattle/
Tacoma. On these runs the
engine will be periodically
passing through Othello. Lat-
er, it will be transferred to
other main lines in the
10,200-mile railroad system.
The locomotive, No. 156, is
a model SD-40-2 built by the
Electro-Motive Division of
3,000 horsepower rating is
produced by six separate
motors working together.
The red, white and blue
design was specially created
by a Chicago studio, but the
stencil cutting and painting
were done in the railroad's
own shops in Milwaukee.
Commenting on the deci-
sion to mark the Bicentennial
in this way, Worthington L.
Smith, president of the
Milwaukee Road, observed
that railroads occupy a pro-
minent place in the history of
the United States.
"They literally knit the
country together in the early
years, and are still basic to the
smooth operation of American
industry", he said. "I feel that
it is appropriate for a railroad
to make this kind of gesture
by way of tribute to our
nation's 200th year."
