A successful Othel6, businessman, who has found lots of time to devote to community and Basin-wide projects while developint one of the most successful farm implement dealerships in the Northwest, was last week's featured personality in the Who's Who contest. Currently in his third year as president of the Columbia Basin Development League, Roger Thieme's "civic" efforts recently have been directed toward bringing the Basin Project to its full develop- ment. Thieme has spent hundreds of hours working on the difficult task of assuring the continued development of the Basin, which in itself would be a tremendous economic boost to Eastern Washington. Those efforts have consisted of several trips to Washington D.C., along with numerous visits to Olympia. "I ~tbink we're now at the point that in two years we'll know whether or not the Project is going to be developed," Thieme reported last week. Busy Booster Although Basin Develop- ment has occupied much of Thieme's "free time" the past two years, he has been a busy community booster since ar- riving here in 1966. He served on the Othello School District board of directors for seven years, holding two terms as board president. He was a first winner of the local DSA award given by the Jaycees in 1968, is a charter member of the Othello Rotary Club, and active in the Chamber of Commerce. He has also been active in the Association of Washington Businesses and numerous implement dealer trade organizations. Thieme has participated in local Republican politics, holding GOP club and precinct committeeman positions, and serving county campaign chairman for Governor Dan Evans two years ago. He has been on stage in numerous Othello Theatre Guild productions and is a member of the Paradise Lutheran Church congrega- tion. Thieme was also recently appointed to the Governor's Committee on Reclamation and Irrigation. He grad- uated from high school there and then received a B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of Idaho in 1958. He returned to Kimberly to farm for five years and then joined the John Deere Imple- ment Company, serving as a company representative out of Portland for two years. An opportunity to purchase Evergreen Implement brought Thieme here in 1966 and he is president and general manager of the local business, which has had rapid growth through the past eight years. Thieme and his wife, Joyce, who grew up in nearby Twin Falls, just seven miles from Kimberly, have two children, Danny, an OHS senior, and Kelly, an eighth grader at McFarland.
